Udit & Aditya Narayan — Live in Concert

The second of three concerts that brought touring artists from India to Dayton, in support of the Butterfly Playground at the Washington Township Recreation Center.

Bollywood playback legend Udit Narayan headlined at the Performing Arts Center, with his son Aditya Narayan, actress Priti Jhangiani and Indian Idol’s Aditi Paul — 25 musicians and dancers from Mumbai, on a two-month tour of the US and Canada.

The evening

Three and a half hours of hits, with father and son sharing the stage

Narayan opened with his perennial Papa Kehte Hain and worked through favorites such as Tere Naam, Pehla Nasha, Khaike Paan Banaraswala and the melodious Main Yahan Hoon from Veer-Zaara, alongside the 2007 hit Do You Wanna Partner? — it was the first big show held in the newly built Performing Arts Center.

He then ceded much of the stage to his son. Aditya turned up the energy with newer tracks like Mauja Hi Mauja and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, and the two later joined together for a duet of Do You Wanna Partner? and Deewangee. Backstage, Udit Narayan put it simply: “My son is great. All the girls love him!”

Aditi Paul lent her voice to songs including Beedi and Dama Dam Mast Kalandar, Deepa Narayan joined her husband for a couple of Nepali numbers, and Priti Jhangiani danced to numbers including Crazy Kiya Re and Aaja Nachle — rounding out a three-and-a-half-hour show backed by a seven-piece band and a full company of Bollywood dancers.

It was the second of the visiting-artist concerts; Lamhe — Live by Legends closed out the series two years later, in 2010.
